Medieval Buddhist Paintings Found in Nepal

Wednesday May 9, 2007
In a snowbound cave about 160 miles northwest of Katmandu, a large mural and several other wall paintings depicting Buddha have been discovered. Dating back to at least the 12th century, the mural is about 25 feet wide and is composed of more than 50 panels, each measuring about 14 inches by 17 inches. Manuscripts in the Tibetan language were found in a nearby cave. The research team of Nepalese, Italian and American archeologists, art experts, and climbers are keeping the exact location of the caves a secret for fear visitors could damage the findings.
