English Agriculture

Friday June 1, 2007
Throughout the Middle Ages, the foundation of the economy in nearly every European kingdom or principality was agriculture. The "common-field" system of husbandry was practiced by village communities through most of England. Villeins earned their keep on the lord's manor by working his land part of the time, although eventually some tenants paid their rent in coin instead. And some very useful books on husbandry and surveying were published, which give the modern historian a window into medieval farming methods.

Find out more about the History of English Agriculture in this extract from a 1911 Encyclopedia Article.
