Thursday November 20, 2008
A priceless Byzantine icon, believed to date to the 14th century, has been returned to Greece after 30 years. The piece is thought to have been painted by a master iconographer and depicts the removal of Christ's body from the cross. It may originally have been a gift by the emperor Andronikos Palaeologos to the monastery of Timios Prodromos in Serres. The icon was looted from the monastery in 1978. Find out what happened to this treasured masterpiece in the article by Helena Smith at The Guardian.
