While helping to survey the foreshore of the Thames near the Tower of London, a mudlark discovered a clay roof finial that may date as far back as the late 12th century. The finial is in the shape of an animal and would have decorated the ridges of a tiled roof. The discovery sheds light on the face of medieval London, which was known to have sported many thatched roofs during this time period and apparently had buildings with tiled roofs as well.
Find out more about the discovery in the item at the Museum of London, and be sure to visit the Medieval Gallery while you're there.
