He traveled widely, yet really only wanted to live the life of a hermit in the desert. He was ordained a priest and became secretary to the pope, but he preferred the quiet life. He was Saint Jerome -- the man whose translation of the Bible into Latin would become the standard edition for the medieval Christian Church: the Vulgate.
