Castel Sant'Angelo

By May 3, 2012

Follow me on:

On the banks of the Tiber River in Rome, Italy, stands a formidable fortress, a circular bastion whose history goes back to ancient times. It is the Castel Sant'Angelo -- castle, prison, and refuge of popes through the Middle Ages.

The image is taken from a photochrom print made available through the Library of Congress, LC-DIG-ppmsc-06594. There are no known restrictions on reproduction.
