It sure isn't Gollum's "precious," or any other treasure, for that matter. But for just a moment, I'd like to believe it's two shiny gold coins dug up in Egypt this week. Each bears images of Byzantine emperors, and they glow so radiantly that they almost hypnotized me through my monitor. They're important because they give scholars a very good idea of what coins looked like and the quality craftsmanship with which they were made in the seventh century. Find out more in the article by Nevine El-Aref at Ahram Online, and see a very nice photo of both the obverse and the reverse of each coin.
And what is that in my pocket? A couple of pennies, of course. Darn. I really was hoping I had forgotten treasure in there.
