About Who's Who in Medieval History

About the Project

By Melissa Snell, About.com

Our Who's Who collection is relatively small at this time, but I'll be adding to it on a regular basis. You are very welcome to contribute! I am always looking for informative books and useful websites to help our visitors.

About the Indices

There are several different ways to find people in the Who's Who in Medieval History project. If you know the name of the individual you're seeking, the simplest method is to use the alphabetical index. Many individuals are listed by both their first and last names (if they have more than one name) to help you find people of whose names you're not certain.

You can also look for people by the century or the geographical location in which they lived, or by their role in society (e.g., cleric, philosopher, scientist, artist, etc.).

When you visit the page for a particular individual, you will find that his year of birth, the year he died, the geographical areas in which he lived and his various roles in society are hyperlinked. You can click these links to go to the appropriate index. For example, Thomas Aquinas was born in 1225; click the year in his page to go to the chronological index for the thirteenth century and see who else was around in his time.

Important Dates

When interesting dates are known about a person, they will be included under the "Important Dates" heading. Click the hyperlinked date to go to the appropriate page of This Date in Medieval History and see what else, if anything, happened on that date.

If no pertinent dates are known about the individual, the "Important Dates" section will not be included on the page.

About the Links

In most cases, the links in the On the Web section will lead you directly to useful websites. In cases where there are an abundance of links available, the links will lead you to subindices which in turn lead to sites on the web.

Most of the links will take you to sites on the web within a removable navigational frame. The framed sites are not part of About.com, nor were they created by your Guide. For bookmarking, printing, and navigating info, or if you have any problems, please visit our page about frames.

About the Books

As with the On the Web section, when there are an abundance of print resources to list, the links under In Print will lead to subindices.

Please note: I have not been able to read every book listed under "In Print." The list is provided to help you find more information about the individual in question. You will have to make your own judgment concerning the value of the printed material, and it would be the wisest course to seek the book at your library before purchasing it.

Related Resources

These are almost always pages here at the Medieval History site that offer a selection of links to sites on the web in the given topic. If, for example, you have encountered the philosopher Peter Abelard and would like to learn more about medieval Philosophy, you'll find a link to our index on Philosophy & Theology in the Related Resources section on Peter's page.

Who's New in Who's Who

Who's New in Who's Who will take you to a list of the latest additions to our resource, along with the date he or she was added.

Can't find him?

Please remember, our resource is still growing. Don't forget to consult an encyclopedia for basic details about any individual not yet represented here; or, if you're looking for more in-depth data than is available on the web or are interested in an obscure individual, post to our board or to a mailing list.

I hope you find Who's Who in Medieval History a valuable and interesting resource!
