attention of the new king of England. James VI of Scotland became
James I of England upon the death of his cousin Elizabeth I in 1603,
and in 1605 he became the object of the thwarted Gunpowder Plot.
MacBeth, first performed no
earlier than 1605, addressed the many feelings evoked by the
attempted regicide, and the play was a great success in its day as
well as now.
