WHO WAS BORN

1403:

King Charles VII of France

Known as Charles the Well-Served and Charles the Victorious, the king succeeded in driving the English from France during the Hundred Years' War, thanks in part to the assistance of Joan of Arc.

WHO DIED

1072:

Stigand

Stigand became Bishop of Winchester under Edward the Confessor, and after making peace between King Edward and Earl Godwine he was made Archbishop of Canterbury. However, the office had not been officially vacated when his predecessor, Robert of Jumièges, fled, and under canonical law it was illegal for him to hold the office while Robert still lived. His continuation as Archbishop as well as Bishop of Winchester was one of the reasons why Pope Alexander II gave his support to William's invasion, but Stigand was too strong to remove immediately and kept the archbishopric until 1070.

Several of Stigand's deeds are recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.
