WHO WAS BORN

1473:

King James IV of Scotland

A popular ruler, James extended royal control over western and northern Scotland and built up the kingdom's role in European politics. The land remained fairly peaceful and prosperous throughout his reign, where education and learning was encouraged, but war with England was ongoing. James' marriage to Margaret Tudor, daughter of King Henry VII, helped stablize relations. However, he would later ally with France against King Henry VIII, and though he saw some military success, he was ultimately defeated and died at the Battle of Flodden in 1513.

Saint Patrick

The year of Patrick's death is disputed, but he is believed to have died on March 17th.

1040:

Harald Harefoot

Harald was the illegitimate son of Canute, the first Danish king of England. While regent for his legitimate half-brother Hardicanute, he took the English throne for himself while his brother was occupied in Denmark.

Ibn Khaldun

1516:

Giuliano de Medici

Giuliano became ruler of Florence when the Medici were reinstated thanks to Pope Julius II and a Spanish army. His term was brief, however, for when his brother became Pope Leo X, as a cardinal Giuliano also went to Rome.
