Simplicius elected pope

1575:

Battle of Tukaroi

This battle between the armies of the Indian Mughal emperor Akbar and the Afghan sultan of Bengal Da`ud Khan took place at a village between Midnapore and Jalesar in western Bengal and resulted in the scattering the Bengali army. Bengal was ultimately conquered by the Mughals in 1576.

 

WHO WAS BORN

Tahmasp I

The founder of the Safavid dynasty, Tahmasp was a mere child when he took the throne and remained a pawn of powerful tribal leaders for some time. Ottoman invasions endangered Iran until peace was concluded in 1555.

Edward, Lord Herbert of Chirbury

A courtier, soldier, diplomat, and poet, Edward is also known for his less-than-humble Autobiography.

 

WHO DIED

1046:

Sylvester III

After a Roman faction drove Pope Benedict IX out of Rome, they elected Sylvester, but he was expelled a month later by Benedict's supporters. The faction then sold the papacy to Giovanni Graziano, who became Pope Gregory VI. Recognizing Gregory as the legitimate pope, Sylvester returned to his old bishopric of Sabina. He and Gregory are usually considered antipopes.
