1364: |
Charles V crowned King of France |
|
Charles was known as "the Wise" for his scholarship. He also led France in recovery from the devastation of the first part of the Hundred Years' War. |

1455: |
Calixtus III elected pope |
|
Alfonso Borgia was 77 years old when he became Pope Calixtus III. His diplomacy and influence -- along with that of Tommasso Parentucelli (later Pope Nicholas V, whom he succeeded) -- had helped heal a schism in the church. During his short reign as Pope, Calixtus worked in vain for a crusade to save Christendom from the Turks. He also ordered the re-examination of Joan of Arc's case. His most notable flaw was nepotism, showering favors on his nephew, the notorious Rodrigo Borgia, and making him a cardinal. |
