EVENTS

1455:

First Battle of Saint Albans

The first battle of the Wars of the Roses, the Battle of Saint Albans occurred when Richard, Duke of York became convinced that the king's wife, Margaret of Anjou, was plotting his destruction with Edmund Beaufort, the Duke of Somerset. The brief skirmish, in which Richard Neville played a significant role, resulted in Somerset's death and the capture of King Henry VI, but York's ascendancy was short-lived, and Margaret regained control a year later.

A second, bloodier battle occurred at St. Albans on Feb. 17, 1461.
