Cosimo the Great was elected to rule Florence in 1537 and held the title until his death in 1574. Though acquisitive (he conquered most of Tuscany) and somewhat unscrupulous, he was most interested in serving the welfare of his country. He came up with the advanced idea of housing all public services in a single building (the "offices," or Uffizi, now a notable museum) and hired Giorgio Vasari as his primary architect. |
