1215:

King John signs the Magna Carta

Succumbing to pressure from the barons, John signed the document at Runnymede and declared that copies should be distributed and publicly read throughout England. While its initial impact was limited, the Magna Carta served as a significant precedent for future democratic government in the centuries to come, including that of the U.S.
