Hugh Capet crowned |

The first Capetian king, Hugh built up a power base that rivaled that of the last Carolingian king, Lothair. He was elected king of France in May by an assembly of Frankish lords, who became convinced that Lothair's heir Charles was unfit to rule. Deeming the crown elective rather than hereditary, they crowned Hugh at Noyon on July 5, 987. |
