WHO DIED
1566: |
Suleyman the Magnificent |
The reign of Suleyman (also "Suleiman" and "Süleyman") is considered by most historians to be the epitome of Ottoman culture. At age 72, unable to ride a horse and transported in a curtained litter, he was invading Hungary when he died suddenly of natural causes. His vizier, concerned over the stability of the empire, hid the fact of his death from all but a trusted few for three weeks, until Suleyman's son Selim was safely in control of matters in Istanbul. This item was suggested by John Herrman. Thanks, John! |
