Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, was defeated by the Umayyad caliph's army in this engagement, which helped secure the Umayyad dynasty and became an annual holy day of mourning among the Shi'ite Muslims.

The Battle of Tours

Charles Martel succeeded in stopping Muslim invaders in this highly significant battle.

1361:

Prince Edward marries Joan Plantagenet

Divorced from her first husband (who she married in secret at age 12) and widowed when her second husband died in France, Joan, "The Fair Maid of Kent," was not considered the ideal wife for the heir to the English throne. But it appears to have been a successful match. Joan bore Edward two sons, the youngest of whom survived to become Richard II.
