Artifacts and Antiques

I've got a book (or sword, or suit of armor) that I'm trying to identify or evaluate. Can you tell me where it's from or how much it's worth?
The specialized skills required for identifying antiques take years to acquire and are in an area of study with which I have no experience. Furthermore, even if I had the expertise required, I could not tell from photographs posted on the web or (gasp!) sent to me via email whether or not an item is authentic. Please phone a nearby antique dealer or antiquarian bookseller to start your quest in the real world! This is one of those rare areas where the Internet will be of little, if any, assistance.

Antiques and Collecting site.

Can you help me find out more about my family history?
This is a specific, research-intensive field that requires time and access to resources I do not have. Please visit About's
Genealogy site for excellent links, tips, software info, and other genealogical research aids.

Fiction & Fantasy

I'm looking for information about dragons, sorcerers, unicorns, Conan the Barbarian, Xena the Warrior Princess...
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there are no such things as dragons or unicorns, magic did not exist in the Middle Ages, Conan was the brainchild of a 20th-century author and Xena is a TV character who doesn't even fit into the medieval era. The next time you see something on TV and are wondering if it's based on a "real" event/person/medieval concept, please search this site before you email me. If it isn't here, it didn't exist.

Living History

We're performing a play (or having a Renaissance Faire, or recreating the middle ages in some event). I need instructions for making a costume (or cooking authentic food, or making armor)...
Whenever you do something that brings the past alive in some way, you're participating in "living history." Please visit our
Living History Index for Reenactment Aids such as costuming resources, recipes, and armor-making instructions. Also, check out our pages of net links on Daily Life for more about "what life was like" in the middle ages, and don't miss our Top Medieval Daily Life Books, where you'll find the titles and authors of several exceedingly helpful books on this subject.

    Try the
Medieval and Renaissance Wedding Ring, a web ring of related sites with resources for people planning or participating in a medieval-themed wedding. One of the best sites is the Medieval and Renaissance Wedding Page by Kirsti Thomas.

No Response

I emailed you and I got no answer. Why?
There are several reasons why you may not have heard back from me. Other than those that concern a
homework question, the most common have to do with your return address.
  • Please check to be sure your email program is configured with your complete and proper email address in the "reply-to address" field.
  • Also, please do not email me from one address and ask me to respond to another. If I cannot respond by clicking the "reply" button in my email program, you will receive no reply.
  • If you are an AOL user, please be sure you don't have a block on my address (historymedren@aboutguide.com).
  • If you are a WEB-TV user, you may not be able to receive email from About.com addresses at your WEB-TV address. You may wish to sign up for a free online email account and use that to contact About.com Guides (and receive About.com newsletters).

If none of the above circumstances apply to you, please accept my apologies! One way or another, your message has gotten lost in the mail.
