Before he became king of
England, Henry-II-to
be married the
indomitable Eleanor of Aquitaine, who had been married to King Louis
VII of France. With Louis, she had only daughters, and they were able
to get the marriage annulled. Eleanor promptly wed Henry, who was 12
years younger than herself, bringing her considerable lands in France
into the marriage. She gave Henry three daughters and four sons, two
of whom (Richard and John) Eleanor would live to see become kings of
England.
