Henry I lost his son William when the White Ship sank in the English Channel. This left only his daughter Matilda (also called Maud) to inherit Henry's throne. Although Henry received assurances from his barons that Matilda would have their support as queen, upon his death Stephen of Blois was able to claim the throne and garner some backing, triggering a civil war.
