When King Henry II appoints his drinking buddy Thomas Á Becket as Archbishop of Canterbury, he believes he has placed a malleable ally in the most powerful ecclesiastical post in England. But Becket surprises Henry by taking his new position seriously, and he is more often than not at odds with his old friend the king. A battle of wills ensues that explodes their friendship and ends in tragedy.
The outstanding script is well-played out by a superb cast. Peter O'Toole is forceful as Henry Plantagenet, a role he would reprise four years later in The Lion in Winter with equal vigor. Richard Burton displays his usual range as the one-time carouser coming to grips with his spiritual duty. The result is a captivating and thought-provoking drama.
