With this film, Kenneth Branagh established himself as a force to be reckoned with in Shakespearean cinema. Bringing together a huge cast of some of the finest actors in Britain, he proves more than worthy to lead them, both as a director and in the role of Prince Hal. The movie is dark and unstintingly realistic in its depiction of death, treachery and courage, and the climactic sequence at Agincourt is an astonishing piece of filmwork.
Highlighting the film is an awe-inspiring soundtrack by Patrick Doyle that stands on its own merits. Hearing this music on public radio more than a year after I saw the movie, I spent months searching every CD store in the area until I found a copy. Ten years later, it is still one of my favorites, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
In addition to being honored by Oscar, Branagh's Henry V won a British Academy Award, European Film Awards, and awards from the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle. For a complete list of nominations and awards, visit the awards page at the Internet Movie Database.
