In the News

Gold Sword Pommel Discovered

Through the use of a simple metal detector on the shore of the River Humber in Hull, East Yorks, two men discovered a small gold sword pommel dating back to approximately 500 AD. The sword to which it was once attached may have belonged to a king. The pommel is currently at the Yorkshire Museum in York, England, where it will remain until an inquest determines whether or not it qualifies as treasure trove. Its sale value is estimated at over £500,000.

 

 

Medieval Minutia

In medieval Europe there was such a high rate of enslavement of the Slavic peoples that the Latin term for "slave" (famulus, manicipium, or servus, depending on usage) was replaced with "slav" and "slave."
