In the News
The Snorri Sets Sail from Sisimiut
The Viking Voyage 1000 is back on the open sea after equipment failures extended their stay in Sisimiut, Greenland. Now expedition leader W. Hodding Carter faces a difficult decision: to try crossing the Davis Strait to Labrador or to set a course for Baffin Island. The Davis Strait is an open crossing with no place to land, and Baffin Island would be safer; but weather troubles may make the island unapproachable.
And be sure to check out the Snorri daily journal at Beyond Lands' End.
Medieval Minutia
So significant was the longbow as a technologically superior weapon that in 1337, King Edward III of England, hoping to counteract the numeric disadvantage of his armies in the war against France, prohibited all sport but archery on pain of death and canceled all debts of anyone who produced the weapon and its arrows.
