New Chat Schedule

Our chat schedule is as outlined below until further notice:

Eastern Australia: Tuesday, 12-2 pm

Midweek Break
Eastern: Wednesday, 2-4 pm
UTC: Wednesday, 7-9 pm

I rarely set a particular topic, because there's so much to talk about; and conversations have a way of wandering. So feel free to bring up the subjects you like best. If you're new to medieval history, please don't be too shy to ask a question; if any of us can answer it, we'd love to.

Hope to see you in the chat room. And be sure to check out our latest chat profiles.

Medieval Minutia

The Norman warlord Robert Guiscard was a powerful and dynamic leader, but his wife Sichelgaita was no less impressive. In 1080 the ambitious Guiscard launched a campaign against the Byzantine Empire. In the Battle of Durazzo, his army was put to flight, but Sichelgaita charged after them, shouting, "How far will you flee? Stand and acquit yourselves like men!" The sound of her thundering voice and the sight of her galloping towards them, hair streaming from beneath her helmet, spear upraised, stopped them in their tracks. The Normans returned to the fray and were victorious.

Site Update

Directory Reorganization

Our directory has undergone some major reorganization. Many of our net link pages were just too long and unwieldy, and have been broken up into separate pages. Other pages have been hard for people to find, and have been moved out of subdirectories to the main Net Link Menu, or into different subdirectories.

I think the changes I have made will make it easier to find what you're looking for as well as reduce the time spent scrolling through link lists. I hope you think so too and I welcome your feedback on this matter.

There are so many changes that there isn't enough room to describe them all here, so I've put a complete description of all changes online.

If a particular net links page no longer includes all the links it once had, look at the bottom for a link back to the subdirectory, where you can find more pages on the same subject. If a subdirectory no longer includes all the net link pages it once had, return to the Net Link Menu.

Don't forget, you can find the above page by clicking Net Links in the content menu on any page of our site (right under your Guide's pic).

For your convenience, I have added an alphabetical index of every net link page at the site.

And last but not least, please remember that our site is searchable via the search box at the bottom of every page. Remember, *one* word in your search term works best.

Medieval History Mini-Quiz

We experienced technical difficulties with last week's mini-quiz, so the same question will be run again this week. Apologies to all visitors, and thanks for your patience.

Elsewhere at About.com

Do Eleanor, Joan, and Elizabeth make medieval history all worthwhile? When you look at Daily Life in the Middle Ages, is it the women's lives that fascinate you the most? When the conversation turns to knighthood and chivalry, is it the female knights you find most intriguing? Then the Women's History site at About.com will make your day. Guide Jone Johnson-Lewis has the scoop on famous and infamous women throughout history.

Quote of the Knight

I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England, too.

Queen Elizabeth I
