The Dark Age Quiz
Question 19
The empire Charlemagne had built did not long outlast the death of his son Louis. Then a German king, who managed to keep the disparate German duchies together, was named Roman Emperor in 962. The territory he controlled was not exactly the same as that of the Carolingian Empire, but it was a considerable chunk of north central Europe, and it would come to be known as the Holy Roman Empire. Many modern scholars consider this German king to be the first true Holy Roman Emperor.
