Survey Results, Part 2 > Page 1, 2, 3

Who Are You People?

The results presented here are from the first segment of the second page of our survey, "About You." A total of 171 visitors responded in this segment. I was gratified to see a fairly wide variety of visitors from different places, age ranges, and walks of life.

How Old You Are

Our youngest survey respondent was 12; our oldest, 72. There were more respondents who were 43 than any other age. If you're wondering, your Guide fits into the 36-50 age-range.

Where You're From

By far the most common home country was the U.S., but we have respondents from four continents, and I've chatted with a visitor from a fifth: South America. (Is there Internet access in Antarctica yet?)

U.S. visitors came from 40 different states, plus one from the Virgin Islands and one whose response was "the midwest." Four of the respondents from the U.S. declined to provide their home state.

In addition to the states shown above, there were three visitors each from IN and LA; two each from CT, GA, NE, NH, NC and WI; and one each from DE, ID, IA, KS, KY, MD, MN, NM, ND, OK, RI, SC, SD, VT and WV. (If you're unfamiliar with U.S. State abbreviations, About Guide Matt Rosenberg has a handy list at his Geography site.) Your Guide hails from Texas.

Of our Australian visitors, two each are from New South Wales and Queensland, one is from South Australia, and one is from ACT (Australian Capital Territory).

What Languages You Speak

It should come as no surprise that the vast majority of the respondents in an English-language survey use English as their primary language. What is intriguing is the number and variety of secondary languages resondents admitted to speaking.

Of the 170 visitors who answered this portion of the survey, 165 (97%) report they are most comfortable with English. Nineteen visitors speak French, but only one of them is more fluent in French than English. The four other visitors who consider English a secondary language use Danish, Greek, Italian and Spanish.

Twenty-six individuals speak a language other than English, either as a first or second language. The figures below represent the number of people that speak each language. The percent figure indicates the percentage of the total (26) that speak that particular language.

Sixteen people speak a total of two languages (English and something else), five speak three languages, one speaks four, two speak five, and two people speak six languages. I'm impressed! I'd try to convince you I can speak six languages, but all I can really say in five of them is "I don't understand."
