Host
a Chat x The
Solar! It was a close race.
The
Round Table took
an early lead, but soon both The
Solar and
Traveler's Rest overtook
it. Within only a few days The
Solar had
established its frontrunner position, although our chat
buddy JohnHospitaller, campaigning for Traveler's
Rest,
almost
single-handedly closed the gap. The final results
were: Special thanks go to
Nancy Frankel and Possum for their suggestions. And many
thanks to everyone who suggested names, voted, and dropped
in to chat! The
Random Drawing The person whose name
I drew in the second random drawing has yet to contact me.
He, or she, has until Midnight Eastern time tonight (11 p.m.
Central Time) to respond to the notification, or I'll draw
another name. So, if you voted in the second phase of the
contest, keep your eyes on your in-box! If I need to draw
another name the new winner will be notified early Tuesday
and will have 48 hours to respond. The name of whoever
ultimately wins the random drawing will be posted in the
Knightly Newsletter.
Even
when there are no scheduled chats, our chat room is
accessible, and everyone is
welcome!

About the Solar
As Teresa said when she submitted the name to our contest, the Solar was the center of conversation in a medieval castle. According to Life in a Medieval Castle by Joseph and Frances Gies, the term was originally applied to the private chamber of the lord of the castle; it then came to be applied to any private chamber, and eventually it was used to refer to a private sitting room off the main hall.
Castles were worlds unto themselves, often a hive of activity, both in wartime and in peace. It must have been pleasant to take an hour's refuge in the Solar for some good conversation with good company.
So think of the Medieval History site as a castle (with a library, of course!), and the Solar as the chamber where we can step away from the tumult of everyday life for a conversation about our medieval past. Hope to chat with you there!
