An extremely influential Father of the Church, Ambrose was a member of a powerful Roman family. He was unexpectedly chosen as bishop of Milan, even though he was not yet baptized, to help avoid a disputed election and keep the peace. He also wrote masterful literature and hymns. Ambrose converted and baptized Augustine of Hippo, and played a significant role in the cultural and political life of fourth-century Milan.
