Cassiodorus

490-c. 585

Monastic
Writer & Historian

Italy

Flavius Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus served as a consul under Theodoric and provided some very favorable press for the Ostrogoth king, writing a (now lost) history of the Goths. He did well in public service until he retired to found a monastery named Vivarium. There he perpetuated the culture of Rome by collecting manuscripts and getting his monks to copy works by authors both pagan and Christian. He also wrote a biography of his colleague under Theodoric, Boethius.
