Elizabeth
David Starkey hosts this four-part documentary series that explores Elizabeth's life in reign in depth. This VHS collection is only available through A&E.com.

Elizabeth
Though it was nominated for an Oscar, I found this film overwrought and heavy-handed, saved only by an affecting performance from Cate Blanchett. If you choose to see it, keep in mind that everything -- even the costuming -- is inaccurate.

Elizabeth R
This extraordinary 9-hour miniseries stars Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth. Only a dramatization this long can fully explore Elizabeth's reign and elusive personality. An outstanding cast and excellent script make every minute worth your time.

Fire over England
Elizabeth is actually a minor role, though a major character, in this adventure about a spy for England in the Spanish court just prior to the Armada. A very young Laurence Olivier plays the English adventurer, and Flora Robson turns in a fine performance as the queen.

The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex
Errol Flynn plays the passionate Essex with flair, and Bette Davis brings fire and steel to the role of Elizabeth. The working relationship of the two leads was even more turbulent than that of the historical figures, but it lends the film an appropriate atmosphere of tension, although the story is somewhat off-base.

The Virgin Queen
Davis again takes on the role of Elizabeth in a colorful costume drama with Richard Todd as Raleigh and Joan Collins as his lady-love. More accurate than Elizabeth and Essex, yet still not completely on the mark, it is nonetheless enjoyable.

Young Bess
Jean Simmons is radiant and Stewart Granger is dashing in this highly inaccurate version of the supposed romance between Elizabeth and Thomas Seymour.
