Who's Who in Medieval History and the Renaissance

Julian of Norwich

1342-c. 1416

Woman of Note
Writers

Great Britain: England

When she was about 30, Julian (or Juliana) became gravely ill, and she was miraculously healed after a series of visions. She later wrote about her experiences. Her works explored the profound mysteries of the Christian faith and are considered among the most beautiful expressions of mysticism of the Middle Ages. Julian became an anchoress, living in isolation at St. Julian's Church, Norwich, which is where she may have acquired her name.
