Philip II of Spain
Before Philip was the King of Spain he was joint ruler of England while he was married to Mary I, and it was his Armada that Queen Elizabeth's navy defeated. He also acquired Portugal and the Netherlands (the latter of which saw a revolt triggered by his intolerance), and built up considerable holdings in the Americas.
