Pippin II, also known as Pippin the Younger and Pippin of Herstal (in French, Pépin d'Héristal) was the grandson of Pippin the Elder, Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia. The younger Pippin would also become Mayor of the Palace, but instead of merely handling administrative duties, Pippin took control of the Frankish kingdom and ruled in place of the ineffective Merovingian kings. He would be succeeded by his illegitimate son, Charles Martel.
