Who's Who in Medieval History and the Renaissance

Pope Anastasius II

?-498

Pope

Italy

Born in Rome, Anastasius was elected less than a week after the death of his predecessor, Gelasius I, in the midst of the Acacian Schism.

Pope Anastasius sought to heal the breach between East and West and received representatives from Byzantine ecclesiastics. This led to conflict with the Romans, who believed he was making conciliatory moves toward the heretical Monophysites instead of standing fast against it as his predecessors had done. Whether or not this was rightly the case, Anastasius acquired a reputation as a heretic because of it. He was chastised by the author of the Liber Pontificalis, and he was included among the heretics in the sixth circle of hell by Dante in his Inferno.

Anastasius would be succeeded by Symmachus.
