Definition: This city in present-day Germany was the favorite residence of Charlemagne, and remained an important city through most of the Middle Ages. More than 30 German emperors and kings were crowned in Aachen, beginning with Otto I in 936. Charlemagne's tomb is in the Palatine Chapel (built 790–805 and still standing today), as is a marble throne, believed to be his, that was used for coronations.
