B.C. (Before Christ)

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The abbreviation B.C. stands for "Before Christ," part of a dating system that has been used in western scholarship for approximately 1500 years. Its counterpart, A.D., stands for Anno Domini (Latin for "Year of Our Lord"). Since the medieval era began several hundred years after the birth of Jesus Christ, B.C. is rarely used at this website; but occasional reference to events before his birth are made.
Also Known As: B.C.E.
Alternate Spellings: BC
Examples:
Julius Caesar invaded Britain in 55 B.C.
Caesar returned to Britain in 54 B.C.E. and invaded it again.
