C.E. (Common Era)

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The abbreviation C.E. stands for "Common Era," an alternate method of notation to the traditional A.D., or Anno Domine, used in much of the west.

In the last decade or so, some theologians recognized that non-Christians may be offended by the religious implications of Anno Domine and devised a religiously neutral nomenclature: Common Era (C.E.) and Before the Common Era (B.C.E.). The dates remain the same: the year A.D. 1453 is no different than the year 1453 C.E. This "politically correct" terminology has its detractors, but it is gaining ground with historians and other scholars.

Also Known As: Common Era, A.D.
Alternate Spellings: CE
Examples:
William the Conqueror invaded England in 1066 C.E.
