Hildegard of Bingen was a visionary of 12th-century Germany. She wrote saints' lives, poetry, and music, but most significantly, she wrote down her prophetic visions. The books containing these visions included Scivias (1141–52) and Liber divinorum operum (1163-70). The books were illuminated when she wrote them, possibly by nuns at her abbey under her direction. This gallery offers a sampling of Hildegard's works as well as an image of Hildegard herself.
