Images of the ground-breaking physician and alchemist

By , About.com Guide

Paracelsus was a physician and alchemist who made significant strides in the field of medicine. Though nothing if not provocative -- and even considered flamboyant by some -- it is nearly impossible to find any image that depicts him as other than serious.

Several of these images appear to come from the frontispieces of books written by Paracelsus and published during his lifetime or shortly thereafter; they therefore may represent his physical appearance fairly accurately. It may be for that reason that later artists portrayed him as balding, large-eyed, and rather sour.

If you have images of Paracelsus you'd like to share at the Medieval History site, or if you have information about any of these graphics you think should be displayed here, please feel free to contact me.
