EVENTS

1429: Order of the Golden Fleece established
Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, founded the order for the glory of the saints and protection of the church on the occasion of his marriage to Isabella, daughter of King John I of Portugal. The fleece holds double significance as an object of knightly quest and a symbol of one of Philip's sources of wealth, wool.

WHO DIED

681: Pope St. Agatho
A Benedictine monk in Palermo, Agatho was allegedly more than one hundred years old when he became pope. His term lasted three short years, during which time the Sixth Ecumenical Council was held and Agatho is said to have performed many miracles.

1276: Pope Gregory X
It took three years for the College of Cardinals to elect Tedaldo Visconti to the pontificate. Born in Piacenza in 1210, he was only an archdeacon when he became Pope Gregory X, but he already had experience as a diplomat. His term was marked by attempts at reform and reunion with the Eastern Church, and he showed himself to be an efficient leader.
