A chemist, physiologist, and physician, van Helmont recognized
the existence of discrete gases and identified carbon dioxide. His
record of his experiences
with transmutation was edited by his son, Franciscus.

1519: Maximilian I
Maximilian,
Archduke of Austria, King of Germany, and Holy Roman Emperor, was
extremely successful in expanding his holdings through negotiations,
military threat, and his own and his son's marriages. He waged war
against the French, and at his death passed on to his grandson,
Charles
V, a vast realm that included parts of the Netherlands, Hungary,
Bohemia, and Spain.
