EVENTS

1556: Holy Roman Emperor Charles V abidcates
Charles, who inherited a vast empire from his grandfather, Maximilian, had difficulty holding his lands together under the pressures of growing Protestant rebellion, the antagonism of Pope Adrian VI, and Turkish and French incursions. At last he yielded his claims to the Netherlands and Spain in favor of his son, Philip II, and entered a monastery after ceding his title to his brother, Ferdinand I.

WHO WAS BORN

1245: Edmund Lancaster
Edmund was the founder of the House of Lancaster and son of King Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence.

1409: Rene I, king of Naples and Sicily and Jerusalem
Although Rene held the title of King of Naples and was also the duke consort of Lorraine, his true power was as duke of Bar, duke of Anjou, count of Provence and count of Piedmont.

WHO DIED

1554: Christiern Pedersen
One of the first humanists to "rediscover" Denmark's cultural heritage, Pederson encouraged the use of a vernacular style in Danish literature.
