1643: The Battle of Braddock Down
This battle
of the English
Civil War was won by Cornish Royalists under the command of Bevil
Grenville and Ralph Hopton. They defeated parliamentarian forces led
by Colonel Ruthven. Cornwall was strongly royalist, and Braddock Down
was only the first in a series of setbacks suffered by the
Roundheads.

It was Dogen,
a leading Buddhist of Japan, who introduced Zen in the form of the
Soto school.
