EVENTS

1592: Clement VIII elected pope
Clement was the last pope to serve during the Counter-Reformation. He recognized Henry IV as the rightful king of France, incorporated the duchy of Ferrara into the Papal states, and was responsible for the printing of the Vulgate Bible and other significant liturgical works.

1648: Treaty of Westphalia is signed
The Peace of Westphalia brought an end to the Eighty Years' War between the Spanish and the Dutch as well as an end to the German Thirty Years' War.

WHO DIED

1649: King Charles I of England
The journey that began seven years earlier and set off the English Civil War ended when Charles was tried and convicted of treason by a Parliament whose power over him he did not recognize. Charles was beheaded more than a year after his trial began.
