1638: National Covenant inaugurated
The National
Covenant, signed by many Scots and officially inaugurated in the
Greyfriars' churchyard, Edinburgh, denounced the attempts by Charles
I to force the Scottish church to conform to English practices, at
the same time urging loyalty to the king.

1533: Michel Eyquem de Montaigne
Montaigne's
Essais
(Essays), in which he examined a variety of subjects with wit and
skepticism, gave the word "essay" its modern meaning and created it
as a literary genre. He also studied law and spoke up for humanity in
the religious wars of late 16th-century France.
WHO DIED
1105: Raymond IV, of Saint-Gilles
Raymond
was the first (and one of the most effective) of the western European
rulers to join the First Crusade.
