1215: Hojo Tokimasa
A warrior of the Taira
family, Tokimasa helped establish the Kamakura
shogunate and was a powerful force behind the scenes.
1497: Jean d' Ockeghem
Jean (Johannes) Ockeghem
was a highly-respected composer of sacred and secular music. He began
his career as a singer and became a chaplain and composer to kings.
He traveled a great deal and in so doing expanded his musical
knowledge. He taught, as well, influencing a generation of
composers.
1515: Aldus Manutius the Elder
Manutius
was a leading typographer, printer, publisher and author
whose work was significant in making printed books more affordable,
more popular, and more easily-accepted by the upper classes. At his
death his brothers-in-law carried on the business until his son
Paulus took over; when Paulus retired his son Aldus the
Younger replaced him. The Aldine family possibly printed as many as a
thousand editions during the sixteenth century and was doubtless one
of the most important forces in the history
of printing and typography.
