862: St. Swithun
Bishop of Winchester and royal counselor to kings Egbert and Aethelwulf, little else is known about Swithun. His feast day (July 15) is associated with an old superstition, which states that if it rains on St. Swithun's day, 40 days of rain will follow.

A Benedictine abbot, William was a strong advocate of the reforms put forward by Pope Gregory VII.
